The Government of India is promoting Research and Development for the Indian energy sector through different R&D programmes. Northern Coalfields Limited, Singrauli promotes science and applied research leading to technology development in the energy sector through SARAS. In view of current requirement of improvement in existing mining practices, need for advanced technologies in mining and development in Renewable Energy, all R&D Projects of NCL through SARAS are categorized under following heads:

  • Advanced Mining Technologies
  • Renewable Energy
  • Environment
  • Strategically implementation of new Projects
  • Alternative uses of bi-products/waste management

R&D project proposals under above mentioned heads are invited by SARAS. Once a proposal is received under SARAS, it is reviewed by Joint Programme Committee (JPC) comprising of members from NCL and IIT (BHU). The job of JPC involves:

  • Inviting fresh research proposals
  • Carrying out first level scrutiny
  • Processing the scrutinized proposal for final approval
  • Monitoring of the progress of the projects at regular intervals
  • Framing R&D budget estimates
  • Dissemination of research findings and promoting their application to field operations
